The Kooks - Ooh La
Tv show setting:
Again like on The strokes video Someday the Kooks include a strange tv chat show setting even though it is only a short segment. This in this context creates a weird indie vibe to the video as the chat show host is exaggerated and not realistic making them seam fake where as the band are down to earth and normal. This contrast makes the band seam approachable unlike the way pop artists are portrayed as being superficial in their videos.

Colour - black and white and faded colouring:

The video includes mostly black and white footage which links directly to the indie/rock music convention of using the black and white effect. This effect usually makes a video seam more serious however as the band are quite lively and immature in their performance it doesn't really reach this intended effect. But the real intention is to portray the New french wave effect as the video is set in France. 

Close up shots of lead singer:

Again as a convention of all music videos the band have included many close up shots of the lead singer. To draw focus on to the lead singer makes him seam more important than his fellow band members. 

Performance footage: there is only performance footage of the lead singer which again promotes him as being the most important member of the band.

Driving footage: Driving footage is included in the video to indicate travelling. The car used is run down to again show the indie vibe.
Cross fading: The fading of two pieces of footage together and cross them over each other.This agin creates a grungy feel to the video making it seam indie.

This is a very rough edit I created on photoshop using screen shots of my previous filmed footage. As the quality of the image wasn't very good I using the effects tool added this complete black and white effect. This very simplistic approach was inspired by the Arctic Monkeys past art work. Both use straight black and white colouring and only simple lines. Also as this was intended to be a simple teaser advert I added minimal text/information in order to create hype and mystery behind the upcoming Sly Antics album.

DEPECHE MODE - Never let Me Down Again (1987)



In this video there are some beautiful examples of black and white footage and some interesting ideas for shots. As we were brainstorming about using a car and trying to get footage from that and of it moving, this video has some good scope for ideas on how to frame it.

Also, because its an older music video, it gives it a crackled-like look to it which we also spoke about, for this we thought about trying to mimic the use of a super 8 camera or trying to find effects that will make it look similar.

After researching Depeshe mode and looking into their french new wave style music video Never let me down again we decided that we like their stylised car shots. These are rough re-creation test shots of a car, however this will not be that car that we will be using as we are wanting to use a more vintage looking car to fit with the retro style effect of our music video.

To try and recreate the old style back and white effect used in Depeche modes video Never let me down again we have found an FCPX plugin for $50 (32.56 British Pound) to replicate the style of a super-8 and 16mm camera.

Black and white and non-linear

The pixies video Where is my mind also uses a black and white approach whilst also including a strange and random story line of a dog. It is unclear of what is happening much like in depeche modes non-linear videos.

It seams as if the black and white approach is on commonly used by alternative artists.

 The pixies also use a non linear approach in their video Snakes, by using random places and objects whose purpose are revealed later on.

Use of masks

Pixies have used masks in a series of their music videos for example in the music video Snakes, this creates an air of mystery which encourages the viewer to watch the view again to try and make more sense of it. It is also a quirky and arty approach which what I'm after.  They have used this again in their music video Silver sail to create the same effect.
